Help! My Teeth Are Yellow

Help! My Teeth Are Yellow

A sparkling, white smile exudes confidence, youth, and beauty. If you’re reluctant to smile in photos or find yourself covering your mouth with your hand when you speak due to a dull dingy smile, teeth whitening is for you. The simple in-office process can lighten your teeth up to eight shades in just one visit.

Zoom!® teeth whitening offered at Advanced Care Dentistry in Woodinville, Washington, is effective, and when managed by our professional team, exceptionally safe. And, if you’re not sure you want a quick, dramatic shift, we can also offer you a take-home whitening kit that’s far more effective than any over-the-counter options you get at the store.

Here’s what to know about yellowing teeth and the steps you can take to smile brilliantly again.

Why are my teeth yellow?

Yellowing teeth are not a result of poor dental hygiene. We know you’re brushing and flossing diligently at home.

But, despite these efforts, if you’re drinking red wine, coffee, or black tea, or consuming dark foods like tomato sauce and berries frequently, your teeth start to stain. Smoking and chewing tobacco also affect the color of your teeth.

The simple aging process also leads to yellower teeth. The outer enamel coating of your teeth thins, so the darker dentin inside shows through.

Other reasons for yellowing teeth include trauma and some medications. When you come to your teeth whitening appointment, we’ll determine the cause for your discoloration and recommend the best next steps to correct the yellow hue.

How does teeth whitening work?

Zoom! is a medical-grade concentration that whitens your teeth. Its primary ingredient is hydrogen peroxide, which is safe for your teeth and is a component in many over-the-counter bleaching systems. Zoom! has a much higher percentage of hydrogen peroxide compared with store-bought whiteners, however. Its 25% formula makes it far more effective.

During your appointment, we carefully cover your gums and other soft tissue and then apply Zoom! to your teeth. The formula breaks down the stains on your teeth so that they disappear. To enhance the effects, we shine a special Zoom! Advanced Power Chairside Lamp to speed up whitening. The UV (ultraviolet) light helps the compounds take effect.

Will Zoom! work for me?

Our providers evaluate the shade and cause of your discoloration and tell you if professional teeth whitening is the right way to get a brighter smile. The formula works best on yellowish stains caused by food, drink, aging, or smoking.

If you have brown or gray stains due to medications or trauma, we can discuss other cosmetic dentistry fixes, like veneers or crowns.

What if I want a more gradual change in the color of my smile?

If you want a smile that gradually transforms from yellow to bright, take home Zoom! kits are for you. These custom-fit trays are filled with a slightly lower concentration of the whitening formula.

You wear the trays at home for about 30 minutes a day over the course of a few weeks. You experience whitening that occurs more gradually and can discreetly do so in the privacy of your own home.
